Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Palace of Versailles is about 40 minutes from central Paris by train. The main palace building has a dedicated wheelchair-accessible route that covers the most important rooms, including the Hall of Mirrors. Free wheelchairs are available for loan at the entrance. The gardens are vast (800 hectares) and partially accessible, with an electric shuttle that runs between key points.

Getting There

  • RER: Versailles-Chateau-Rive Gauche (RER C). The station has elevator access. From the station, it is about a 10-minute walk (800m) to the palace entrance on flat, paved sidewalks.
  • Train: SNCF trains from Gare Montparnasse to Versailles-Chantiers. This station also has elevator access but is a longer walk (1.5km) to the palace.
  • Parking: Accessible parking is available in the Place d'Armes parking lot, directly in front of the palace. Display your disability parking permit.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Free wheelchair loan at the main entrance. No deposit. Ask at the accessibility desk (marked with wheelchair symbol).
  • The dedicated wheelchair route through the palace covers the State Apartments, Hall of Mirrors, and Queen's Apartments. Staff members along the route can open accessible doors and assist.
  • Elevator access within the palace connects different levels of the route.
  • The Chapel and Opera cannot be visited by wheelchair users due to steps.
  • Gardens: main paths from the palace terrace to the Grand Canal are paved. Side paths to the groves (bosquets) are gravel and difficult.
  • An accessible electric shuttle runs through the gardens with stops at the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon. It costs 8.50 EUR (free for companions of disabled visitors).

Request the free "Accessible Visitor" guide at the entrance desk. It includes a map showing the wheelchair route, elevator locations, accessible toilets, and ramp access points throughout the palace and gardens.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are inside the palace near the entrance (before entering the tour route) and near the cafe area. In the gardens, accessible toilets are at the Grand Trianon and near the Grand Canal.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Free entry for disabled visitors and one companion with a disability card. Otherwise 21 EUR for palace + gardens.
  • Book a timed entry ticket online even with free admission. The palace limits visitor numbers and timed tickets guarantee entry.
  • Visit on a weekday to avoid the worst crowds. Tuesdays are the busiest weekday.
  • The gardens are free to enter on most days (paid during Musical Fountains shows and Musical Gardens events).
  • Plan at least half a day. The palace and gardens are enormous. Focus on the palace route and the Grand Canal area if energy is limited.
  • Bring water and snacks. There are limited food options in the gardens, and distances between cafe stops are significant.
