Partially Accessible

Overview

The Pantheon is a grand neoclassical monument in the Latin Quarter, originally built as a church and now serving as a mausoleum for distinguished French citizens. Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, Voltaire, and Rousseau are among those buried in the crypt below. The main floor features a massive open interior with Foucault's Pendulum. Wheelchair users can access the main floor via a portable ramp and the crypt via elevator. The dome colonnade is stairs only.

Getting There

  • RER: Luxembourg (RER B). The station has an elevator. From the exit, the Pantheon is a 5-minute uphill walk (300m) along Rue Soufflot. The slope is moderate but steady.
  • Bus: Routes 21, 27, 38, 82, 84, 85, 89. Stop "Pantheon" on route 89 is directly in front.
  • Metro: Cardinal Lemoine (Line 10) - no elevator. Use bus instead.

The entrance is on Place du Pantheon. The building sits at the top of a gentle hill.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main entrance has steps. A portable ramp is available on request. Press the accessibility call button to the right of the main doors, or ask any staff member.
  • Inside, the main floor is flat stone and spacious. Easy to navigate.
  • Foucault's Pendulum hangs in the center of the main floor and is visible from wheelchair height.
  • The crypt is accessible by elevator. The elevator entrance is on the left side of the building (ask staff to direct you). The crypt corridors are wide enough for wheelchairs.
  • The dome colonnade requires climbing 206 narrow stairs. No elevator access. This area is not wheelchair accessible.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located at the lower level near the crypt entrance. They have grab bars and an emergency call button.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Free entry for disabled visitors and one companion with a disability card. Otherwise 11.50 EUR.
  • Visit on weekday mornings for fewer crowds. The Pantheon is less visited than the major museums, so crowds are rarely a problem.
  • The crypt is the main attraction. The tombs of Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, Alexandre Dumas, and others are well signed.
  • Combine with a visit to Jardin du Luxembourg (300m downhill, an easy wheelchair route).
  • The building is cold inside, even in summer. Bring a layer.
