Mostly Accessible

Overview

Jardin du Luxembourg is one of Paris's most beloved parks, covering 23 hectares in the heart of the Left Bank. The main paths are paved and flat, making them suitable for wheelchair users. The gravel side paths and some lawn areas are harder to navigate. The park features a large central pond, the Luxembourg Palace (Senate building, not open to visitors), free outdoor sculpture, a playground, and several cafes.

Getting There

  • RER: Luxembourg (RER B). This station has an elevator to street level. The park entrance is 50m from the station exit.
  • Metro: Saint-Sulpice (Line 4) or Notre-Dame-des-Champs (Line 12). Neither has elevators. Use bus instead.
  • Bus: Routes 38, 82, 84, 89. Stop "Luxembourg" on route 38 is closest to the main gate.

The main entrance on Rue de Medicis has a flat, wide gate suitable for wheelchairs.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Main paved paths around the central pond and along the Luxembourg Palace are smooth and flat.
  • Gravel paths make up most of the side routes. After rain, these become soft and difficult for wheelchair wheels.
  • The Medici Fountain path is paved and worth visiting.
  • Benches are plentiful along all main paths.
  • The children's playground area has some accessible features but is primarily designed for able-bodied children.
  • The park is free and open daily. No tickets or reservations needed.

Stick to the central paved paths for the easiest wheelchair route. Start at the Rue de Medicis entrance, follow the main path south to the central pond, then loop around the Senate building. This route covers the best of the park on smooth surfaces.

Accessible Toilets

Two accessible public toilets in the park. One is near the children's playground (south side), and the other is near the tennis courts (west side). Both are free Sanisette automatic toilets. They are spacious with grab bars.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Free entry, no closing time restrictions except park closing hours (varies by season).
  • The park has metal chairs scattered around the central pond area. Wheelchair users can park alongside them for a pleasant spot.
  • The Orangerie area (south end) hosts free photography and art exhibitions.
  • The Luxembourg Museum (inside the park, separate admission) is partially accessible on the ground floor.
  • Food options include a cafe near the central pond (accessible, outdoor seating) and several food kiosks.
