Overview
The Musee d'Orsay houses the world's largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, displayed inside a converted railway station from 1900. The museum has made accessibility a priority, with step-free access throughout, elevators to every floor, and dedicated services for visitors with disabilities.
Getting There
- Metro: Solferino (Line 12) - exit at street level, then 200m walk. Note: Solferino station has no elevator, so wheelchair users should take the bus instead.
- RER: Musee d'Orsay (RER C) - the station exit leads directly to the museum entrance. The RER station has an elevator.
- Bus: Routes 24, 63, 68, 69, 73, 83, 84, 94. All Paris buses have ramps.
- Accessible entrance: The accessible entrance is on Rue de la Legion d'Honneur (the side entrance on the right of the building). Look for the wheelchair symbol. This entrance also provides priority access.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Free wheelchair loan at the entrance. No deposit required. Ask at the welcome desk.
- Elevators connect all five levels of the museum. Elevators are large enough for electric wheelchairs.
- Wide corridors and ramps throughout. No steps between gallery rooms on the same floor.
- The main hall (ground floor) has the most space and is easiest to navigate.
- Upper floors can be busy during peak hours, which makes navigation harder.
Priority entrance for wheelchair users is on Rue de la Legion d'Honneur, the side street to the right of the main facade. This entrance has a flat threshold and is much less crowded than the main entrance.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets are available on the ground floor (level 0) near the bookshop, on level 2, and on level 5 near the cafe. All are clearly signed with the wheelchair symbol. They are spacious with grab bars and an emergency call button.
