Fully Accessible

Overview

The Louvre is one of the most accessible major museums in Europe. Free entry for disabled visitors and a companion. Wheelchairs are available for free loan. Elevators reach every wing and level. A dedicated tactile gallery in the sculpture department lets blind and low-vision visitors touch replicas of famous works. The museum's size means planning your route in advance is important.

Getting There

  • Metro: Palais Royal-Musee du Louvre (Lines 1, 7). Line 1 platforms are accessible at this station.
  • Bus: Routes 21, 24, 27, 39, 48, 68, 69, 72, 81, 95.
  • Accessible entrance: The accessible entrance is through the Carrousel du Louvre (underground shopping mall), accessible from 99 Rue de Rivoli. This avoids the Pyramid queue entirely and has flat access. There is also an elevator inside the Pyramid for those who enter that way.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Wheelchair entrance through the Carrousel du Louvre at 99 Rue de Rivoli. Flat access, no steps.
  • Free wheelchair loan at the main information desk under the Pyramid. No deposit.
  • Elevators in all three wings (Denon, Sully, Richelieu) reach every floor.
  • Most galleries are step-free. A few small rooms in the Sully wing have one or two steps with no ramp alternative; staff can redirect you.
  • The Mona Lisa room gets extremely crowded. Visit before 10:00am or after 4:00pm for more space.

Download the free Louvre app before your visit. It includes an accessible route planner that shows elevator locations, accessible toilets, and step-free paths between galleries.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets in every wing on every floor. The cleanest and least busy ones are in the Richelieu wing, level 1.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Free entry for disabled visitors and one companion with a disability card. No ticket needed; go directly to the dedicated entrance.
  • Plan to see one or two wings per visit. The museum is enormous. Trying to cover everything in one trip is exhausting for anyone.
  • The tactile gallery (Galerie Tactile) is in the Denon wing, ground floor. It is open to all visitors, not just those with visual impairments.
  • Wednesday and Friday evenings (until 9:45pm) are less crowded than daytime visits.
  • Folding stools are available for loan alongside wheelchairs for visitors who can walk short distances but need to rest frequently.
