Overview
The Centre Pompidou is Paris's premier modern and contemporary art museum, housed in the famous inside-out building designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. The museum is fully accessible with elevators to all six floors, including the rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Paris. The building's industrial design means wide open spaces and easy navigation.
Getting There
- Metro: Rambuteau (Line 11) or Hotel de Ville (Lines 1, 11). Line 1 at Hotel de Ville has elevator access.
- Bus: Routes 29, 38, 47, 75. Stop "Centre Pompidou" on route 29 is directly in front.
- The main entrance faces the sloping piazza (Place Georges Pompidou). The piazza is paved but slopes downward toward the entrance. The entrance itself is flat.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Step-free entrance at ground level.
- Large elevators serve all six floors, including the top-floor permanent collection and the rooftop terrace.
- Wheelchairs available for free loan at the ground floor welcome desk.
- All gallery spaces are open plan with wide aisles. Temporary exhibitions on floors 1 and 6 may occasionally have installations that narrow pathways, but staff can advise.
- The rooftop terrace (level 6) offers one of the best free views of Paris and is fully accessible by elevator.
- The public library (BPI) on floors 1-3 is also fully accessible.
The rooftop terrace is free to access even without a museum ticket. Take the elevator to level 6 and enjoy views of Sacre-Coeur, the Eiffel Tower, and the Paris skyline. It is less crowded than the Eiffel Tower viewing platforms.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets on every floor. The ground floor facilities are the newest and most spacious.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Free entry for disabled visitors and one companion. Bring your disability card.
- The museum is closed on Tuesdays. Best visited on weekday mornings.
- The piazza in front of the building is a gathering spot for street performers. It slopes, so wheelchair users should approach from the flat north side (Rue Saint-Martin).
- The museum shop on the ground floor is large and fully accessible.
- Combine with a walk through the nearby Marais district, which has relatively flat, paved streets.
