Partially Accessible

Overview

The Arc de Triomphe stands at the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle roundabout at the top of the Champs-Elysees. The underground passage from the sidewalk to the monument base is accessible by elevator. At ground level, you can view the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the eternal flame, and the exhibition area. The rooftop terrace with its panoramic views requires climbing 284 stairs and has no elevator.

Getting There

  • Metro: Charles de Gaulle-Etoile (Lines 1, 2, 6). Line 1 platform is accessible. Follow signs to the Arc de Triomphe exit.
  • Bus: Routes 22, 30, 31, 52, 73, 92. Stop "Charles de Gaulle-Etoile" on route 73 is closest.

Do NOT attempt to cross the roundabout at street level. Use the underground passage, which is accessible by elevator from the sidewalk on the Champs-Elysees side.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The underground passage from the Champs-Elysees sidewalk to the monument base has an elevator.
  • Ground level is flat and accessible. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and eternal flame are viewable at ground level.
  • The small exhibition area at the base is accessible and free.
  • No elevator to the rooftop terrace. The 284 narrow spiral steps have no alternative access.
  • The Champs-Elysees itself has wide, smooth sidewalks suitable for wheelchair users.

Never cross the Place de l'Etoile roundabout above ground. Traffic moves fast with no pedestrian crossings. Always use the underground passage accessed from the Champs-Elysees sidewalk.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located in the underground passage area before reaching the monument. They are free to use.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The ground-level experience is worth the visit even without rooftop access. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ceremony happens daily at 6:30pm.
  • Disability card holders get free entry to the exhibition area. One companion is also free.
  • The Champs-Elysees is best visited on foot or by wheelchair on Sundays when the first Sunday of the month is car-free.
  • Combine with a visit to the Petit Palais (1.5km walk down the Champs-Elysees, flat sidewalk the entire way).
  • The eternal flame rekindling ceremony at 6:30pm is a moving daily event and is fully accessible at ground level.
